In the Congressional debate of 1850 the Young Guard convinced President Taylor of the "higher law" and opposing all treaties proposed. Lucky for the North, Zachary Taylor died which freed his Vice President, Millard Fillmore to sign off on the Compromises of 1850. In order to convince the states of the Compromise, Clay Webster and Douglas, aka the "Union Savers", gave many speeches --Clay gave over 70 speeches solidifying the North's acceptance of the concession. The "fire-eaters" of the South however didn't agree with the Compromise. Favoring the North, California would become the 28th state and yet another free state as well as New Mexico and Utah becoming free soil states. The Southern Unionists outnumbered the "fire-eaters" and the Compromise was passed.
