The European Age of Exploration began in the 15th century and lasted through the 17th century and as new land was being discovered and colonized, the need for new labor systems, such as slavery, increased due to a number of economic, geographic, and social factors .

One economic factor that encouraged the growth of slavery is that it amplified the interdepndency of the Triangle Trade because it created more trade routes between Africa and the New World and allowed more products to be exported from the New World back to Europe. One geographic factor that encouraged the growth of slavery is that the Europeans were dealing with unfamiliar crops and farmland because the African and Native slaves were already in tune with the crops the Europeans wanted to produce which made for efficient farming. One social factor that encouraged the growth of slavery was the idea of racial supremacy because the white people saw themselves as superior beings to black Africans and natives just because of the color of their skin.

During the colonization period of American history, many groups ventured to America for different reasons- for some, it was freedom from religious persecution, for others it meant opportunity that they would never get in Europe, and for others, it was for profitThese profit-seeking individuals is what will drive slavery into prominence throughout the south. The introduction of cash crops to the south combined with vast amounts of fertile land created the perfect storm for slavery to persist and thrive unlike anywhere else in the Americas.

During the early 1600s to late 1700s colonization was occuring in the Americas. Throughout these years the colonies were providing goods to Europe and large plantations emerged. Economic, geographic, and social factors encouraged the growth of slavery as an important part of the economy of the southern colonies between 1607 and 1775.  Due to large plantations, Atlantic Slave Trade, Colombian Exchange, and Triangular Trade a labor system was needed in order to mass produce these demanded goods, this system being slavery.

Climate of the southern colonies, plantations thrived, but required massive amounts of manpower in order to function. African slaves were well adapted to the heat of the south and therefore made for a considerably more successful workforce than that made up of indentured servants. With these contributing factors, the economy of the southern colonies became heavily reliant upon cash crops and a slave-based workforce.

Between 1607 and 1775 slavery grew dramatically in the southern colonies as a result of economic, geographic, and social factors.
