On July 16, 1945, the first atomic bomb was detonated in the desert of New Mexico.  The Truman Show .Potsdam Conference;

Three weeks later, on August 6th, the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan and three days later on Nagasaki, Japan.   Japan officially surrendered on August 14th.

 


 

 

 

The two bombings killed  between 120,000–220,000 people, most of whom were civilians. They remain the only use of nuclear weapons in the history of armed conflict.

The surrender of Imperial Japan was announced on August 15 and formally signed on September 2, 1945, bringing the hostilities of World War II to a close.

 

By the end of July 1945, the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) was incapable of conducting major operations and an Allied invasion of Japan was imminent.
