The Federalist Papersis a collection of 85 articles and essays written (under the pseudonym Publius) byAlexander HamiltonJames MadisonJohn Jay promoting the ratification of the United States Constitution.

 

 

October 27, 1787 The first of The Federalist Papers by "Publius", Federalist No. 1, is published in The Independent Journal. The planned series of essays would, the authors hoped, "give a satisfactory answer to all the [Anti-Federalist] objections which shall have made their appearance that may seem to have any claim to your attention.

 

 


 

 

 

 

Authorship of the Federalist Papers

  • Alexander Hamilton (51 articles: No. 1, 6–9, 11–13, 15–17, 21–36, 59–61, and 65–85)
  • James Madison (26 articles: No. 10, 14, 37–58 and 62–63)
  • John Jay (5 articles: No. 2–5 and 64).
