A House Divided [1854 to 1859]
A society in the throes of a life-and-death struggle faces an unbridgeable gulf
between moderate voices and extremist views, putting both sides on a tragic collision course.
For years South Carolina had talked about secession (1830’s Tariff issue). Talk of secession had become a perpetual threat through the 1830s and 1840s. It was fueled by a clash of interests: Abolition of slavery vs. Territorial expansion.
The key theme from 1820 to 1854 is COMPROMISE. However, the tide begins to turn
"We separated because of incompatibility of temper. We are divorced,
North from South, because we hate each other so much."
