A newly ascendant conservative movement achieved several political and policy goals during the 1980s and continued to strongly influence public discourse in the following decades.
The Iran hostage crisis was a diplomatic standoff between the United States and Iran. Fifty-two American diplomats and citizens were held hostage for 444 days from November 4, 1979, to January 20, 1981, after a group of Iranian college students belonging to the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam's Line, who supported the Iranian Revolution, took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.

Post Script: December 18, 2015 - Congress passes a budget bill that includes a provision authorizing each of the 52 hostages to receive $10,000 for each day they were held captive. In addition, spouses and children will separately receive a one-time payment of $600,000.

A major goal of Reagan was to reduce the size of the government by shrinking the federal budget and cutting taxes. He proposed a new federal budget that called for cuts of $35 billion, mostly in social programs like food stamps and federally-funded job-training centers.
March 30, 1981 Even though Reagan was nearly killed by an assassin's bullet less than 2 months in office, he remained positive and optimistic about America. His sense of humor never abandoned him, even as he was being rushed to the hospital. for surgery, his wife Nancy asked how he was and he uttered "Honey, I forgot to duck"!. 12 days later, Reagan recovered and returned to work.

About a month after being shot, President Ronald Reagan asked for, and received permission to, address Congress. Reagan had to fight through extended arms and hands to reach the podium. Reagan reveled in, and reciprocated, that good feeling . . . he felt like he was once again performing. Soon enough in his address, Reagan launched into the topics of spending, inflation, and taxes . . . still, six months after his election, the economy was still in "Stagflation" mode. Inflation had scarcely abated and interest rates were punishingly high. Eight million Americans were unemployed, and real wages were down.
Reagan said the effort to end the economic misery should begin with the federal budget, arguing that the federal government was too large and that it spent too much. Reagan mentioned that his proposed budget had moved along until the Democrats in the House presented their version that kept social spending but cut defense spending and raised taxes. Reagan stated that he proposed nothing more than to stop tax increases, not cut taxes. Reagan, speaking in the immediate aftermath of the first Space Shuttle Mission, stated that "We have much greatness before us."
Source: H.W. Brands. Reagan: The Life (2015)After his speech, Reagan's approval rating increased to 68%, which would be the highest it would reach during his remaining time in office. In the House, Speaker Tip O'Neill and the Democrats made a show of resistance, but the tidal wave of support in the nation for Reagan was such that the Democrats didn't dare block the President's budget proposal. The House passed the budget bill, and the House and the Senate prepared to "seal the deal" with a Reconciliation Bill.
Huge tax cuts for wealthy, gov’t has huge budget deficits pay for weapons/economy – but OK
It started with taxes, and his fundamental belief that government had become less the solution, and more the problem in America.
Reagan's economic theory, called supply-side economics, This approach, unlike the approach of John Maynard Keynes, was founded on the [ Milton Friedman's ] principle that tax reductions would stimulate the economy by providing incentives for investment, thereby generating so much growth [ jobs ] and thus new and more taxable income that the gov't would actually gain revenue.
Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981 laid down the foundation for many of his programs. Examples: when he took office unemploymentwas at a near historic high of 10.7%- 8 years later it was an incredible 5.4%! anytime unemployment is under 6% the economy is measured as healthy.
Inflation under Carter had skyrocketed to nearly 14%, by the time Reagan left office in 1988 it was 4.4%!Reagan often said that inflation was the 'silent thief' that hurt Americans. During the decade wealth and financial success were not only not something to strive for but were positively celebrated.
It is my intention to curb the size and influence of the Federal establishment and to demand recognition of the distinction between the powers granted to the Federal Government and those reserved to the States or to the people. All of us need to be reminded that the Federal Government did not create the States; the States created the Federal Government.
In a sense the classic conservative economic principles of Laissez-faire were back with a 1980s look. Gov't should keep its" hands off " the economy as much as possible. De-regulation of rules and laws that hampered business growth was a priority. The business of business was the business of business-not Uncle Sam according to the Reagan economists.

Defense buildup – method of bankrupting Soviet Union – can’t keep up with us, eventually kills them. Money taken from school lunches for huge weapons programs – military industrial complex
