AP Focus: When Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal programs began to positively affect many business owners, workers, farmers, unemployed people, and the elderly, his popularity soared.  The political backing of the Democratic “Solid South”, “new immigrants”, workers, urban dwellers, African Americans (who left the Republican party in large numbers) and the elderly gave Roosevelt tremendous political power.
